Breaking the Rules

Happy Friday Southernistas! I hope y’all had a great work week and that you are ready for the weekend! For some of us it was a four day work week due to the celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I don’t know about y’all but winter has really arrived here in North Carolina and we’ve had more rainy and cloudy days then sunny days. The temperature has dropped with the exception of two days of 60+ degree weather this week. With the days being so gray I’ve taken the opportunity to wear more color and the one color I decided to wear was white. I usually don’t wear white because as a southern girl it was ingrained in me that you don’t wear white after Labor Day. This is so ingrained in me that I really don’t even think about wearing white in the winter unless it is for a church service.

On my fashion journey I am constantly pushing myself to step outside my comfort zone and when I was deciding what to wear my eyes fell on this beautiful Karl Lagerfeld (yes that Karl) skirt I got from a previous Stitch Fix box I almost put it back thinking this is for Spring but then I said to myself “Regina break that no white after Labor day rule!” and so I pulled it out the closet again and paired it with my favorite white sweater from Full Beauty.

I am so glad I did because when I saw the total look it was an instant mood lifter for me and even though it is winter I felt like a beautiful Spring day! So remember to toss outdated fashion rules out the window and wear your white!

Until next time Southernistas remember to Be Bold, Be Beautiful, Be Confident!

The Year that Was

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my Southernistas! It is my prayer that 2019 will be a blessed and prosperous year for you in every area of your life!

I know we that it is January 1, 2019 buy I just wanted to take a moment to look back on 2018. The beginning of the year started out on a sad note for my family with the passing of my grandfather 8 days into 2018. It definitely left a large hole in our life! My Grandfather was 96 years old and he was more like a Father than a grandparent andI miss him so much!

My Grandfather, Ray Dempson

With the sadness came joy and many changes in my life I started this blog which I never thought I would ever have a blog I mean what in the world do I have to say or add for that matter that hasn’t already been said or done but I discovered that I do have something to say and I am really enjoying blogging.

I was part of Dia & Co ambassador pilot program which is now the Dia Domino program and I am happy to still be involved in this program. Through this program I met Laura Stanberry (check out her blog) who is not just my style sister and shopping buddy but a great friend. I also met an amazing group of women in the Dia community which lead to an epic girl’s weekend in Nashville, TN with these women who I now call friends. We talked, laughed, shopped, and truly bonded and we continue to keep in touch with each other. I love these ladies!

2018 was also a year that saw me stretch myself fashion wise I wore leggings/pants and animal prints and until 2018 I had never worn any of those items. I found out I love leggings and while I will always love and never give up my dresses and skirts I now have a new appreciation of leggings! Again I have Dia to thank for pushing me out of my fashion comfort zone. As far as my fashion  is concerned I really feel like I stepped up my fashion game. I also started playing with accessories and started taking better care of my skin.

These are just a few of the great things that happened to me in 2018! Even though the year started out sad it ended on a happy note and I am looking forward to what God has in store for me, my family and you in 2019.

Into The Wild

Hello Southernistas I hope y’all are having a great weekend! Are you ready for the Thanksgiving holiday? Will you be traveling? Are you cooking dinner for family and friends? I am looking forward to the holiday with a little sadness because this will be my family’s first Thanksgiving without my grandfather who passed away at the beginning of this year.

It’s confession time and I know y’all want judge me for what I am about to reveal to you all (big breath) so here goes: I have never worn animal prints. There it is out in the open I have never worn an animal print or even been remotely tempted to wear animal print. This is one trend that has never appealed to me. That is until I saw this leopard print pants suit on Lane Bryant’s website! As soon as my eyes saw this pant suit I wanted it in fact I had to have this suit. I couldn’t believe how much I loved this suit and that I would ever wear a skinny pant. The wonderful thing about the jacket and pants are the stretch! I have big arms so I normally have to size up in jackets and coats but not this jacket there is so much stretch that it fit me like a glove! I also had to size down in the pant also since they are super stretchy. Since I bought this suit I have been bitten by the animal print bug and can’t wait to add more of this print to my closet!

Summer Style Review

Hello Southernistas! I hope everyone had a great weekend and that you are not refreshed and ready to go back to work.

This week I have been racking my brain trying to come up with a topic for this blog post. My first idea was to talk about Fall fashion since the season is just about upon us and retailers are starting to introduce their Fall collections but I am very much a Spring and Summer girl and I’m not ready to say good bye to Summer. Instead of talking about the Fall fashion in this post I decided to use this post as a sweet swansong to these dwindling days of summer (sigh) by looking back on some of my favorite looks this Summer. Last year I was finding my feet with my summer fashion but I feel like this summer I stepped up my fashion. I wore colors and prints I never thought I would wear and had fun with florals. Plus I was pushed outside my fashion comfort zone and wore leggings and pants for the first time in over 20 years. This summer was definitely a fashion high for me on so many levels. I still haven’t conquered my biggest fear yet which is to rock a one piece swimsuit and hopefully I will get up the courage to do this next summer.

Gingham Style

Happy 4th of July y’all! Happy Birthday America!

If you follow me on Instagram (if you don’t why aren’t you?!) you will notice the one print I am obsessed with gingham! I have rediscovered my love of gingham and the fact that it is a trend that looks like it going to around for a while makes me so happy although if it wasn’t I would still wear this print. I own several gingham dresses, skirts, shoes and I plan to buy even more. Gingham doesn’t just come in black and white print but you can get gingham in many colors and it’s up to you how big or small you want to go with the print. For me this print is summer and if there was an official print/pattern of summer it would be gingham. I know there are some of you who aren’t crazy about this print because you believe it makes you look like a picnic blanket and I say what’s wrong with that? Picnics are fun and if I’m wearing something that makes you think of a picnic in the park friends & family or that special someone then all the more reason to wear gingham. Trying to decide what to wear for the 4th of July and you don’t want to do the obvious red, white, and blue or wear shorts and a t-shirt but want a more chic look this is the print that will take your look from super causal to chic and casual. For me as a Southerner gingham is that quintessential southern print for a southern lady. When I saw this dress on Lane Bryant’s website I knew it would be the perfect look for this July 4th holiday.

I decided I wanted a casual look so I wore these cute white mules from Payless Shoe Source and do a little print mixing with probably my favorite tote from

If you don’t have any gingham in your wardrobe I encourage you to add it to your closet. For more gingham fashion click here, here, here, here, here, here, here.

Have a great 4th of July and remember BE BOLD, BE FEARLESS, BE CONFIDENT!

Being Fearless

Hey Y’all! It’s My BIRTHDAY!

When I think about how much time I spent letting fear of what people think of me hold me back from living my life I could kick myself…hard! I allowed fear to rule my life way too long. Fear of what I would look like if I wore that color or that print or those pants. Fear of people laughing at me over my looks, my hair, you name it I thought about it got scared and decided I can’t wear that or do that because what will they think of me. They?! Who are they anyway? They are small minded petty people who get enjoyment out of making your life miserable because they are miserable. We spend way too much time letting fear rule our lives when the only fear we should have is the reverent fear of God the creator of heaven and earth. I decided that this is what I wanted to talk about in this blog after hearing the new song Fear Is a Liarby christian artist Zach Williams and the line in the song that really hit home for me was “fear he is a liar, he will take your breath, stop you in your steps” fear does all this and so much more. Fear will cause you to miss out on some of the greatest opportunities, great relationships, and the worst of all it will stop you from living . Fear robs us of so much! As I celebrate my 47th year on this earth the one thing I really celebrate is that I let go of all those fears that I allowed to rule my life. I’ve squashed those negative voices that were so loud in my head for a lot of my life. I’ve decided to be fearless in my approach to fashion. I now take those fashion risks.

Leggings and Clutch from Dia & Co, Blouse from Stitch Fix, Duster from Lane Bryant, Shoes from Payless,

This is not to say I never have moments of doubt or that those fears have gone completely away I would be lying. What I am saying is that when those fears and doubts, the negative thoughts raises their ugly head I’ve learned to combat them with all the positives in my life. I look in the mirror I see a beautiful and confidant woman who God loves. I am precious in His sight and I don’t have to be a certain size to earn the Father’s love. He has blessed me with a wonderful family, an awesome church family (shout out to AHOD), a really awesome Pastor and Assistant Pastor who has encouraged and supported me in the new phase of my life. It’s all because of Jesus who has made me fearless.

As I celebrate my birthday I encourage you today to conquer whatever that fear is that is holding you back. Wear that dress in that color, print, or pattern that you always wanted to wear but didn’t because someone said “it’s cute but it’s really not you” or “it would look good on you if you lost ____lbs.” Love yourself now.

As the great Rosalind Russell said in the movie Auntie Mame “life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!” So Be Fearless!

Shoe Spotlight: Payless Shoes

Happy Friday y’all!

Let me start this by saying this is not sponsored by Payless Shoe but oh how I wish it was.

It’s no secret that my go to shoe store is Payless Shoe Source. If they ever go public I’m buying stock in Payless because I love this shoe store. If you think Payless doesn’t have chic shoes then you are depriving yourself and you really shouldn’t mistreat yourself. Payless Shoes has even made their NYFW debut! Some years ago Payless partnered with season 1 Project Runway winner and incredibly talented designer Christian Siriano and it is the best thing the powers that be at Payless ever did. This year you were able to purchase the shoes from Christina Siriano’s NYFW show at Payless…SCORE! It’s a great way to own a pair of designer shoes without paying the designer price. They also offer shoe brands American Eagle, BRASH, and other brands. You can also buy Champion tennis shoes at a great price too. Looking for a great pocketbook they have an amazing collection. For you ladies who wear a larger size Payless goes up to a size 12 wide and you can shop for the whole family without busting your budget. There is always a sale and you can really expand your shoe wardrobe when the buy one get one 1/2 off sale going. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the store check them out online. Now I will say that some shoes run small, some run true to size, and some run large so try before you buy. You can also purchase socks, hosiery, shoelaces, and products to care for your shoes.

For a southern girl the shoe is everything and I don’t know about anywhere else in the country but I was raised that the shoes must compliment or match the outfit. If the shoes, along with hat and purse (it’s a thing), were not on point the whole outfit was a fail. As we say in the South we just can’t have that. The last thing you want to hear someone say when they look at your outfit is “bless your heart! what a sweet little outfit” trust me this is not a compliment it’s a sweet way of saying “I can’t believe you left the house looking like that!” Thankfully when I go to Payless I can always find the perfect shoe.

Seeing Red

Happy Sunday Y’all! Hope you had a great weekend and that you’re ready to head back to work.

It is no secret that my favorite color is red. I love the color red and I love how wearing this color makes me feel when I wear it. Red is such a powerful color and this a color that emboldens you, makes you feel sexy and confident. For me red is the ultimate power color. There are times when I get up in the morning and I’m not necessarily feeling my best or it may be a cloudy and gloomy day and that is when I reach for something red in my closet to lift my mood. Ladies let me assure there is a red out there for you trust me. There is nothing like the color red for a boost of confidence weather it is an outfit, lipstick, shoes, or accessories. This is a color that liven up an outfit or add a pop of color to your outfit. Instead of wearing a little black dress try wearing a little red dress and just wait for the compliments. When I saw this dress on Simply Be’s website I knew I had to have despite owning several red dresses already. If you’re not familiar with Simply Be then you are going to thank me for introducing you to this British company. I love Simply Be and their sizing is very generous but when you order from them make sure to check their sizing chart to find your US size. They also offer shoes, lingerie, and accessories and even though they are a UK based company I get my orders pretty quickly. This dress is the perfect date night dress with hubby, first day dress, wedding guest dress, or any special occasion you can’t go wrong with this dress.

This week I encourage to put on that red dress or incorporate red somehow in your look. Until next time y’all Be Bold, Be Fearless, and Be Confidant!

It’s a Shoe Thing

Happy Friday Y’all!

It’s no secret that I love shoes especially heels and the higher the heel the better. My family and friends all know that I take my shoes very seriously. I don’t like to brag but my shoe game is fierce! I am often inspired in my outfit choices by a pair of shoes that I want to wear. For me shoes are the ultimate accessory. You can dress up an outfit or dress down an outfit just by changing your shoes. Now I will admit I have more heels than flats in my closet but I’m working on incorporating more flats in my shoe wardrobe.

This weekend I went to DSW shoe store just to look and ended up buying two pairs of shoes the first are these cute gingham print Anne Klein shoes. Gingham is still avery much a popular trend and they can work as a neutral. It’s a great way to add a pop to a monochromatic outfit. These shoes are true to size and very comfortable which is always a plus when wearing heels. The second pair of shoes I spied were these Kelly & Katie denim heels that have a round toe instead of a pointed toe (your toes will thank you). If you don’t own a pair of denim shoes what are you waiting for? These shoes are true to size and again very, very comfortable. If you’ve never been to DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) I highly recommend DSW it’s a great place to get designer shoes without the designer price.

My next stop was Payless Shoe Source to check out their sale and I found these cute pair of flats! I love these flats and the gold studs on the flats make them that extra something. Flats don’t have to be boring and although I love my heels I realize that flats are practical but practical doesn’t have to mean boring and they can be very stylish. The great thing about Payless is your dollar goes a long way at Payless especially when they are having their buy one get one ½ off sale. If you didn’t know the incredibly talented designer Christian Siriano has a shoe line and pocketbooks with Payless for some years now.

I hope you enjoyed this little shoe blog.

Have a great weekend!

When I look at this picture it makes me sad because I see someone who was sad and depressed, and my fashion reflected that I had given up on me. I had bought into the myth that if I wasn’t a certain size I couldn’t be stylish. So, my uniform became big and boxy and as you can see big and boxy doesn’t do anything for me or for anybody for that matter! I had given into all the negative thoughts and let my past control my present. I believed that I was fat and ugly, I believed that I wasn’t worthy of beautiful fashion until I lost weight, I believed that I had to accept whatever was given to me to wear, I believed that nothing looked good on me period! Then December 29, 2013 happened I woke up that morning sobbing my heart out, feeling like an utter and complete failure, depressed and convinced that if I died no one would miss me. That day marked the beginning of my journey of discovering who I am. I cried out to God and he heard my prayer and I entered 2014 determined to make some changes in my life.

I rededicated my life to Jesus and began the journey of getting to know who Regina is. I can’t tell you how important it is to have cheerleaders in your life. My mom, daughter, my best friend of over 30 years, and my church have been my biggest cheerleaders. I made peace with my past and stopped listening to the negative voices in my head. I stopped just going to websites such as Eloquii, Igigi, and other plus size retailers and looking and wishing I could wear that because the fact was that I could wear these clothes these companies existed for me. I started following plus size bloggers and it boosted my confidence to see other size 22/24 and up women rocking fierce fashion and it made me realize that fashion is not a number on a scale or a tag in my clothes, but fashion is about who you are and how you want to express yourself.

I burned the fashion rule book for plus size women and began to develop my own rules and learned that my style is very feminine and modest. I discovered a love of florals and bold prints and patterns. I’ve always loved bold color and I’m slowly incorporating color into my wardrobe. I’m discovering that I am so much more than society says I am and I have never been happier. The first 3 years of this journey was allowing God to bring me from my broken place to a place of wholeness. He put me back together again and put a smile in my heart. The last two years have been a fashion odyssey. It is my prayer through this blog that you will join me on this journey and that it will inspire you to break free of negative thinking, your past, break out of your style rut and burn your fashion rule book too!

Until next time be blessed, fashionable, and beautiful!
